21 MarGolf & Your Health

A game of golf is normally what we would consider a “healthy” past-time, nevertheless there may be some risks associated with it. Fortunately, you can do something to improve those health hazards and it’s actually not difficult to do.

Some of those health risks may possibly not be too obvious at first, but let’s just go over some of them.

Do you have uncomfortable seats in your golf-cart?

Vanilla Golf Cart

A Vanilla Golf Cart

Not all golf carts today come with comfy seat cushions which means it can sometimes get a really bumpy ride, especially if the course is rather demanding and it goes up and down steep hills and bumps.

With simple golf cart parts such as seat cushions you can prevent that your ride in the cart will be rather uncomfortable. The seat cushions will help to avoid any potential health problems from sitting since the ride across the greens in your golf cart with cushioned seats will be much better for your spine.

Frequent intake of water is important and this is especially true for a sport such as golf

A simple solution here is to get some simple storage compartments or boxes for your golf cart. Some of them may even function as a mini fridge where you can store your drinks and keep them cool for a long time. Another helpful but frequently overlooked golf cart part would be simple cup-holders. Not all carts have them, check your model and make before you buy. Normally, a cup holder will only cost a few bucks but it’s really something you should consider.

Some of those available golf cart parts are very cheap and you can obtain them from many places either in retail stores or via the internet. Know that if you buy a vanilla cart today they will often not come with any extras and accessories. Always think about what you need and what accessory and parts would make the most sense.

05 MarThe Importance of Workplace Ergonomics

We may face a lot of dangers and health hazards on our workplace. According to the UK’s Health and Safety Executive those can be dangers such as asbestos, high temperatures, toxic substances and many more.

But one factor that many may actually not be aware of is the significant health risk that’s associated with prolonged working and sitting at a desk or a computer workstation. Not all people have ergonomic work places which means they have bad posture sitting at work for hours every day.

The result can be back pain, eye strain and general poor health.

What is Ergonomics?

According to WebMD, Ergonomics …

… is the study of the kind of work you do, the environment you work in, and the tools you use to do your job. The goal of office ergonomics is to set up your office work space so that it fits you and the job you are doing.

What this means is that if we understand the basics of ergonomics we will less likely encounter health problems such as eye strain, back pain or migraines. Fortunately, a lot can be done to make our work place more ergonomic. For instance, the right chairs and desks can help to improve posture when we’re sitting. This can greatly help to prevent later health problems.

21 JanBuilding a Healthy Office

Finding the right employees in a business can be difficult and building a workforce of like minded individuals is even harder, that’s why it’s important to invest in the best talent management for your business. Talent management is an approach to hiring that aims to bring the best and brightest people to your business, and help them to find fulfilment in the workplace through your business. It is also the perfect opportunity to find out if the people you are hiring are into the health lifestyle, as having an office full of people with the same mentality means a more satisfied and loyal workforce, which will mean you all have healthier work lives and enrich your company at the same time.

Talent management sees potential employees as human capital, objects to be invested in so that they can grow and in turn help the company grow, which I am a huge believer in. Human capital management takes someone likeminded with something to offer a business and moulds them into a loyal employee who enjoys working for you and is invested in the company’s future as they are in their own, so both sides benefit. To make sure they integrate seamlessly into your office, most talent management services include monitoring an employee’s performance, setting them goals, targets and rating them so that they can deal with their flaws and their successes as they arise. Hey presto! You have a health conscious office full of and extremely motivated people.

Absence management is also a major part of talent management. Absence due to health is inevitable for any working person, so a business has to be equipped to deal with it properly when someone has to take time off. By not properly managing employee absences a business will end up losing money and that doesn’t help anyone. Absence management will allow managers to effectively arrange cover, and monitor people who might have been taking time off for the wrong reasons.

If you’re workforce could be more loyal or likeminded, you need to mix up the way you hire your staff and it’s well worth considering talent management. It may cost you initially but having a loyal, healthy and satisfied workforce powering your company is only going to increase profits and leave you better off in the long run.

09 JanHealthy Holidays

Golf Breaks FranceMy husband and I are both keen golfers, and have been for several years. This year we have decided to book our annual holiday early and go for a golf holidays. We both took it up initially because we wanted to be a bit more active, and it seemed like the perfect sport to try out as it is not too wearing but is so beneficial for your health.

Exercise

Playing a round of golf normally means a few hours of pleasant walking outside, around five to six miles is normal, and it’s not difficult to pick up your walking pace just a small amount to bring your heart rate up. This is a great way to exercise regularly, and it significantly reduces your chances of contracting heart problems later in life. Playing golf  improves your muscle tone, and if you do play regularly can help you lose weight.

De-stress

Having to focus on your game is a great way to relieve stress accumulated at work and at home, as it’s so much easier to switch off and relax when you have something else to think about. Not only will you feel better for the physical and mental exersise during the day – but it will also help you sleep better at night.

Mental attitude

We have both noticed that since we started playing golf, we have been much more positive in our general demeanor. Several people told us that they noticed a change within the first couple of weeks, which is actually the reason that we have decided to take a golfing holiday this year.

Hopefully the golfing holidays will give us the time we need to unwind, with nothing else to think about other than the scorecard and what’s for dinner after the final hole.

24 DecHealthy Gambling?

GamblingWe all know that gambling is addictive.

We also know that addictions are terrible for your health and state of mind, whether the addiction is alcohol, smoking, eating, drugs gambling etc. every one of them has an implication on physical or mental health.

In my opinion, gambling is one of the most dangerous addictions – purely because it is so easy to hide and so hard to diagnose, so by the time you are hooked and you find yourself thinking “I’ll just have one more shot at it.” again and again, there are very few outward signs that friends and family can pick up on before it’s too late. Sadly the first the family often hear about it is the amount of debt someone has managed to dig themselves into.

So, if you do gamble and you want to look after yourself – what do you do?

First off visit gambleaware which has some brilliant advice to help you keep within sensible limits.

The best advice I’ve come across anywhere is to assume you’re going to lose! That way you won’t gamble with money you can’t afford to give away. Also, setting yourself some boundaries really helps. A fixed amount of money to spend is the obvious one, but also restricting yourself to a short amount of time will help you keep perspective and a clear head, so you are less likely to become absorbed and overwhelmed.

If you are going to gamble, make sure you get some proper advice on where to spend your money. There are a number of people who offer professional gambling advice and horse racing tips, and you should listen to what they have to say to make your chances the best possible. For more information about this sort of service, check out this website. However, even with professional help – remember that the odds are never on your side. They are always on the side of the bookies.

05 OctPower bands, healthy or harmful?

Power Bands

I’ve been hearing a lot recently about how excited people are getting over power bands. I thought they looked like a fad and probably did absolutely nothing at all, so to satisfy my curiosity and to back up my suspicions, I did some research and a lot of reading to see if I could find anything meaningful to help decide either way. There is a ton of information out there, and a lot of it is just marketing nonsense so I have tried to cut through all that for you to bring out the more useful facts.

The first thing I found out is that the whole point of these power bands is that they give out ‘negative ions’. These negative ions are supposedly linked to improving your mood, reducing depression an danger, reduce your stress levels and improve your breathing and therefore your blood circulation. Obviously all of these effects are associated with a lot of useless health products claiming to actively improve your health and lifestyle while actually being nothing more than a placebo.

So as you can easily imagine, I thought that all the product hype just sounded a like a lot of marketing trash and buzzwords. However, I found that there have been genuine scientific trials into their effects, which do lend real credibility to the positive effect of negative ions, and therefore power bands on your mood and stress levels.

I was further reassured when I discovered that negative ions actually are completely natural and are most commonly found in places with bright sunlight, running water like rivers or streams and around plants and other foliage. The power bands are designed to incorporate the elements from these natural sources into a bracelet.

So, in short, I’m converted – the scientific proof was enough for me. You should have a look yourself, there are several studies on the subject when you start digging.

In day to day life, the best way to immerse yourself in negative ions is simply to go for a walk in the countryside or your local park. If you can’t do that, then absolutely get one of the wrist power bands, and make sure to get the most efficient one you can find.

I’ve ordered one myself from http://uk.infinitypro.com, so will let you know if it lives up to expectations.

20 SepMy Own Health Blog

It’s been a long time coming, but I have decided that I finally need to take the plunge and start blogging. I now have my own health blog!

The topic of health has become somewhat of an obsession in my life. Though I am not a medical professional in any way, I love reading other blogs and websites online on the topic of health.

I am fascinated by the fact that so much information is available online. Rightly or wrongly I now consult Google and other health websites for minor health related questions before even contacting the doctor in any way!

I find it so interesting to read other health blogs, weight loss blogs, alternative medicine blogs, etc.

So, here on my very shiny new blog, I will be talking about some of the interesting things I am reading and thinking about. The topics of these will vary, mostly depending on what interests me at the time and what is topical. After all, the media are always jumping on some kind of health related topic!

However, before I get started I must stress:

I am not a doctor, nor do I claim to be one. This blog is simply a platform for my thoughts and musings on the topic of health. I do not intend to offer any kind of medical advice. Always seek the advice of a medical professional.
